I’m at the library procrastinating transcribing this interview I did on Thursday that I like 3% fear didn’t record properly, so I’m fucking around on the internet and playing random stuff on iTunes and made the CD playlist above for David—who I think nearly anyone who reads this Tumblr knows. David and I share a love for a lot of “bad” 70s and 80s soft-rock and pop stuff and it was sort of a weird bonding experience we had when we worked together or whatever. To make reference to some song or album and realize that we both were like, “fuck what anybody says, that shit rules”.
I began making a CD for David awhile back that was just going to be all like awesome late-70s, all of the 80s cheez and that sorta spiraled out into this epic mix Joseph and I are working on. The mix came from the really fascinating “chillwave”/”glo fi”/”hypnagogic pop” stuff that’s rolling around in indie music right now. A lot of people wanna make fun of it or laugh it off, but it’s interesting to see something you totally thought was your little up-your-own-ass obsession basically be true of a whole lot of your peers.
So, I made this mix for David, like an extended Side A and Side B on a record, with the first “side” being a bunch of “authentic” 80s shit and the second “side” being a lot of this recent stuff that’s messing with those sounds in totally interesting, creative ways. For a lot of my music nerds, this’ll seem safe or boring of whatever, but it’s the kind of thing most people are tangentially aware of at best and I think it’ll have a cool effect or develop a cool discussion with David. Or maybe you out there too? If anyone wants a copy I’ll upload it or shit man, I’ll mail it to you.
A sub-plot of this is how much of this “new” music comes from the Carolinas (Toro y Moi, Gayngs, Washed Out), where I spend most of my time right now.
